SHIPPING UPDATE - I am not longer shipping whilst travel restrictions are in force in the UK. Whilst living an isolated life is normal for me and I have been extremely cautious about outside contact for many weeks now, it is not fair on Post Office workers to have to process my "non essential" orders during this time. Please feel free to browse and even continue to purchase if you wish, and I will update you on potential shipping dates going forward. Thank you for your understanding, wishing you health and please stay safe everyone!
Unique necklace featuring real English fossils from my collection that I found on the Jurassic Coast and in Leicestershire.
I have taken the idea of hanging decorative objects from chains on a central loop like a chatelaine and applied it to this pendant. A chatelaine was a way for a housekeeper in the 1800's to keep useful objects close in case they were needed during her duties around the house. It often took on a decorative form and was worn as a belt with a hook and clasp and such things were suspended from it as the key to the larder, scissors, a thimble, the household seal, time piece etc.
In true Victorian style, this necklace is dedicated it to Mary Anning, the great female fossil collector, who lead important discoveries in Paleontology in a time that mainly favoured men.
Three English fossils from my own collection of discoveries hang from sterling silver twisted rings with fine antiqued sterling silver chain. This necklace features a calcified Brachiopod, a slice of Sea Lilly (Crinoid), and possibly (although difficult to tell) fossilised rugose coral (Petoskey) all of which I have drilled and prepared by hand.
There is something quite enchanting about this necklace, it has a rustic earthy feel to it. It should be worn with care though as the fossils are delicate (they're many million years old!).
