A found object necklace featuring nautical talisman connected to the ocean in an Ode to the Seafarer, an HMS Victory Token, Seaglass and Driftwood.
I've created this chatelaine style pendant using found objects related to the sea. From three strands connected to a twisted copper infinity loop, I've assembled a piece of driftwood shaped like an anatomical heart, a light green Mermaid's tear made of seaglass and a military memorabilia token fob coin made in 1905 from copper taken from HMS Victory commemorating the battle of Trafalgar and illustrated with said vessel.
I found the piece of driftwood shaped like an anatomical heart on the Lincolnshire coast near to my home. It is decorated with shipworm holes which typically ravage wood from boats and piers and can be regularly seen washed up on the beach. The is the first time I've found such a piece of wood shaped like a small heart however, and have preserved it with varnish so it can be worn.
The seaglass was found on Seaham beach, on the Durham Heritage coast and it is shaped like a teardrop. It is a lighter shade of green than you would normally find with seaglass and was likely manufactured during Victorian or Edwardian times by the glass factories that were once situated there.
I found the HMS Victory token coin fob whilst routing around some old boxes at a local car boot sale. It was made by the British & Foreign Sailor's Society in 1905 to commemorate the centenary of the Battle of Trafalgar and unusually is manufactured from copper taken from HMS Victory itself. On the reverse of the medal it reads 'From BFSS Nelson Centenary containing Victory copper E.R VII' . E.R VII refers to King Edward VII who reigned at the time and who took great interest in the society, allowing his initials to be stamped on the souvenirs.
Each talisman has been wire wrapped with copper wire in keeping with the nautical theme and each one sits on a long copper chain strand from an infinity loop. The longest strand featuring the driftwood heart is 12 cm from the top of the chain to the base of the heart.
This longer length pendant is available on a red copper chain in a length to suit you. Please check out my useful guide to necklace lengths to help choose the right necklace length for you.
