This necklace features a gift from the mermaid sisters, a Codd marble, which was found at Seaham where Victorian and Edwardian glass factories once stood and where now you can find tiny ghosts of the past. Whilst the tide brings treasures to the shore on the Durham Coast twice a day, it's still unusual to find such a vibrant turquoise marble of seaglass.
A codd marble was originally found in a type of bottle used for carbonated drinks. Originally designed in 1872 by English mechanical engineer Hiram Codd, it has a unique closing design based on a glass marble which is held against a rubber seal and sits within a recess in the lip. These heavy glass bottle were usually sold with a deposit on them to be returned, but more often than not, they were broken so that the marble could be given to a child. As such, it's actually quite rare to find a Codd marble these days.
I have carefully drilled this aqua blue beauty and added two organic pewter caps to each end. It is wire wrapped with sterling silver and attached to a nautical style twisted jump ring.
